Townsend Supply was established in 1978 by Richard and Catherine Townsend in Oxford, Arkansas. After retiring from the butcher supply business in Memphis, Tennessee, they moved to Oxford and started manufacturing sausage seasonings and meat cures and selling butcher supplies, steadily growing the business until 1985. John Hatfield purchased Townsend Supply from the family in 1985 and continued expanding the business. John's talent for customer relations and creating unique seasoning blends, from BBQ rubs to unique, personal rubs like Big Daddy's New One and Crash Coarse, helped John grow Townsend Supply into a truly phenomenal Arkansas small business. John's acumen drew the attention of icons in the BBQ and restaurant world, like Sarge Davis of Whole Hog Cafe and Mike Mills (the legend) of 17th Street Barbecue, and began blending their personal BBQ rubs. He also expanded his butcher supply business, custom blending dozens of sausage seasoning recipes for customers throughout the US.
In 2012, Shane Linn and David Blankenship bought Townsend Supply and moved a few miles south of Oxford, to Melbourne, Arkansas. The name became Townsend Spice and Supply, and a new building added a unique and inviting retail storefront. Their goals are simple: never change the excellent reputation of Townsend Supply; never change the well established blends, rubs, cures, and sausage seasonings; continue treating each customer like family (the John Hatfield way); and continue growing and providing new customers with the same quality that is synonymous with Townsend Supply.
Since the opening of the new store Shane and David have added several new blends and many new customers. They now mix BBQ and poultry rubs for Sonny's Barbecue, one of the largest barbecue chains in the nation.
They use only the highest quality raw materials and equipment to create their blends. Along with their unique blends they also offer a wide variety of culinary herbs and spices in bulk and small quantities alike to fit the needs of any operation, from large kitchens and butcher shops to small, backyard BBQ pits and home processing operations.
